It's not a bad life in the muddy river (if life is once)...

Character application is behind the cut. This is the version used to apply to the game [insanejournal.com profile] indarkness_logs. A fancy version without all the OOC notes and such will be posted... eventually.

Character name Faye Valentine
Fandom Cowboy Bebop
Age Faye appears to be 24 years old and has only actively lived for 24 years. However, she is technically 78 years old; 54 years of her life were spent in a cryogenic sleep.
Point in canon I'm bringing Faye in at a point roughly one year after the final episode (Real Folk Blues, Part Two).

Appearance Though she's only five feet and six inches of height, Faye holds herself with the confidence (and wears the high-heeled boots necessary) to appear taller. She's an unusual beauty with fair skin; expressive, green eyes; and short, naturally black hair often dyed to a violet or dark, purplish-blue shade. Or, as many seem to notice first, she's a seductive vixen with a voluptuous body.

Faye tends to use this to her advantage, particularly when bounty hunting; but her appearances and general demeanor have caused quite a bit of trouble at times - especially in the form of catching the attention of unscrupulous men. She often appears harsh and unbreakable at first glance, but those who look closely enough soon discover that Faye's eyes are the gateway to her true emotions.

Her clothing is usually revealing in some manner, be it through lacking length or plunging necklines (depending on the situation), and she always makes sure to look her best. Because she's lucky enough to be blessed with natural good looks, 'looking her best' can mean anything from simply donning a bit of lipstick to going all-out with makeup. It depends on Faye's mood nearly as much as the circumstances.

Post-canon history If circumstances had been different and she had not exchanged personal secrets with Spike before he walked away to certain doom, Faye may have handled his death better. She knew from the moment she chose not to bury a bullet in his spine that he wouldn't return - at least not alive; but she couldn't help feeling betrayed and abandoned. She had all but begged him to stay, and still he ignored her obvious pleas. She had grown to love him, both as a psuedo family member and in a romantic sense she fought to keep secret. Now... it didn't matter. He was gone, as good as dead from the moment he took off in that faded, old clunkard he called the Swordfish II.

Faye's resolve finally shattered that night; unconcerned with keeping face any longer, she broke down and cried over the loss. Even when Jet yelled at her for shooting up the ceiling, she just stared through him and apologized with eerie sincerity. Though she tried to tell herself that he'd survived things no normal human likely would, she also knew Vicious on a disturbingly personal level. She'd seen a glimpse into the demon's mind, and she knew better than to think Spike would survive. He'd have returned with demands of food and board, already... or turned up in some back-alley surgeon's office, where word would have spread to Jet. Such was the general order of these situations, and no news came. In fact, there was no news at all until the next day.

Jet and Faye were eating in relative silence - or, rather, Jet was eating and Faye was poking half-heartedly at the food with a single chopstick - when Bob called to tell Jet of the damage that had been done. Faye only listened half-heartedly, until it was mentioned outright that Spike was among the dead. She was so stunned that she applied enough pressure to snap the eating utensil in half. She'd suspected as much, but it was different knowing for certain. It was... unsettling. Something within Faye followed the chopstick's example. She snapped, grabbed the phone, screamed at Bob for daring to 'waste her time' by 'stating the obvious,' and threw it across the room. Jet may have protested, but she wasn't paying enough attention to know for certain.

Faye gathered everything she owned (as well as a hefty chunk of Jet's funds, some of Spike's remaining weapons-and-ammo stash, and the booze hidden behind the fridge) and left, as she often did when faced with a stressful situation. Her home on the Bebop was just as shattered as the remains of what had been her childhood home; there was no reason to stay. In fact, it hurt too much to see that stupid, yellow couch and imagine him laying across it or pass through the hallway and remember the last conversation they'd shared. The 'family' of four was down to two, and she saw no reason not to cut it back down to one - even with Jet injured and no other place to call home.

Eventually, Faye settled into a vagabond lifestyle, surviving on gambling, well-executed cons, and solo bounty hunting as means of income. Though she had her fair share of encounters with Jet, it always ended the same. He'd pretend to love working alone again, she'd pretend to be doing perfectly fine, and they would part ways. Over time, Faye recovered from the pain of having her little family ripped out from under her... in the same way that she recovered from Witney's betrayal. She put up more defensive walls, became more cynical and pessimistic, and just forged ahead while trying to pretend the past never happened. Still, though, there were bad days. Sometimes, she'd see a shadow or hear a familiar voice... or even mistake a man of similar height and posture for Spike. Other times, she'd swear Ed was walking by, only to realize it was just some quirky child who looked nothing like the young hacker.

By the time six months had passed, Faye had learned to completely ignore those ghosts of the past. She was back to 'normal' - give or take a few emotional scars - and perfectly content to just live without trusting or growing attached to anyone else. It was the only option, the only way she knew to survive. Though she had a small number of sexual flings and many cases of meaningless seduction (the latter in the name of deception), Faye never made any new emotional attachments. There were contacts and people she trusted to point her in the right direction if she needed to find an elusive bounty head, but never people she would consider friends - privately or otherwise. She 'knew' they would just abandon or betray her if she allowed them to grow too close.

With nobody to keep her in check or make her question her shifty morals (although a hidden part of her still claimed Jet and Ed), Faye was essentially back to where she'd been before meeting the Bebop crew. She was a grifter and a gambler, albeit one who also did some bounty hunting on the side. It wasn't a perfect existence, but it was comfortable enough... sometimes. There were always those few instances in which she was caught cheating a person better left untouched or had to deal with piggish men; but overall Faye just wrote those off as hazards of the life she led. Besides, she was always the type to get a little thrill out of being desired and appreciate the opportunity to fight.

What sort of magic/power/mutation do they possess? No special powers or mutations... However, Faye is a skilled con woman who handles firearms well and has significant fighting abilities. She's also a pro at dealing crooked card games and cheating in general (counting cards is one of her specialties when it comes to less-direct methods of skewing a game in her favor).

What weapons/items of note beyond clothing/photos would you like your character to appear with?
+ Her gun, a Glock 30 (.45 ACP ammo, capacity 10 rounds)
+ A special bracelet which doubles as a remote control for the Redtail (her ship); obviously useless right now
+ Two rigged dice (they land on either evens or odds as determined by the remote) and the ankle bracelet used to control them

Personality Faye is a difficult woman to explain. On the most basic level, she's vain, selfish, abrasive, and horribly lazy. She suffers from delusions of grandeur, lending to her air of coolness but also to the overconfident, egotistical behavior she exudes. When faced with stressful situations, her natural instinct is to take flight; but she does have something of a temper and has been known to throw things, react with physical violence when provoked, and (less frequently) get trigger-happy. Except when it comes to emotions, Faye has no trouble speaking her mind and can be quite the sarcastic woman... and she has no qualms with taking credit for others' accomplishments (especially when bounty hunting) or stealing from even the closest of comrades. It's a dog-eat-dog world and Faye believes that the only way to survive is to deceive others before they deceive her. She's usually a cold person who only "warms up" to others for the sake of persuading them into giving her whatever she might want.

On a more personal level, however, she's only so harsh because her past has forced her into resentful cynicism. So many people have betrayed her that she finds it difficult to hand out trust; and even when she does find a trustworthy ally, she has a tendency to second-guess the friendship... and sometimes even betray them out of fear that she'd otherwise be the one abandoned. It's easier to cut losses before going broke (at least on an emotional level) - especially now.

As she grew more accustomed to the Bebop crew and the pieces of her past began to fall into place, Faye started to show signs of caring about others. The delicate, fragile girl underneath the rough exterior became more prominent and she started to feel safe in what was now her "home." Of course, she was still as sarcastic and egotistical as ever; but it wasn't nearly as hard and unfeeling as once before. She was still untrusting and still unwilling to completely let others in... but she'd come close to it with Spike. He was the one person about whom she cared the most in the world. He was someone she loved, trusted, wanted to protect on some levels... and he ripped her heart right from her chest and stomped all over it - metaphorically speaking. He left though she all but begged him to stay with her, turned his back on her with the full intentions of throwing his life away. After his departure, and especially after his death, she hardened up again. Her pessimism and cynicism skyrocketed, and she ran from those who cared about her (particularly Jet) for, among other reasons, the fear that it was only a matter of time until everyone else followed in Spike's footsteps.

Unfortunately, Faye isn't quite as good at cutting losses when it comes to actual money. She's a compulsive gambler with a fondness for the games at which she can't easily cheat - horse and dog races in particular. Although she has great skill with conning her way through card and dice games, she often wastes away her winnings (and much of her other income) with legitimate gambling endeavors. But that's just the way it works - easy come, easy go - and Faye prefers to feel as if she's in control of her own possessions. If she spends everything while she has it, then at least there's nothing left for the debt collectors to claim.

It takes a lot to break through Faye's tough, outer shell; but once someone has, they'll find that she's really just a confused, young woman who does whatever she must in order to get by in life. She cares deeply for those she considers friends and would put her life on the line to defend or protect them (though she's unlikely to admit such a thing). After all, comrades are the closest she'll ever get to having a family, now. Some of her most vulnerable days are those when she gets a flash of memory from her former life; they're second only to situations in which a close ally faces death (or the likelihood thereof). On these bad days, she finds it increasingly difficult to hide behind her defensive, emotional walls. Sometimes, even the toughest of women can be reduced to tears or forced to lose her cool.

Do you have any questions? For once in a mini-eternity, no...
Suggest one game wide / group plot element What about an insect infestation of some sort? It would probably need to be non-deadly insects such as roaches, crickets, glow flies, or lady bugs... but it might prove an interesting way to creep out some of the characters.

Any notes? Things about the character the mods should know but you don’t want made public-player knowledge? Nothing that I don't want other players to see, but there are a few notes I'd like to make...

Faye's in love with Spike. Just don't expect her to admit it unless some sort of special circumstances arise that force her to do so. (Knowing the Heads, that doesn't seem so impossible...) And, since I also play Spike, I'll go ahead and note that Spike doesn't share those feelings. He cares about Faye on a level that's closer to a bond of friendship and only rarely even lets that much show. Had his heart not belonged to Julia, maybe things would have been different; but that's neither here nor there. Whether things change in-game will depend directly on outward circumstances.

She still resents that Spike deemed a suicide mission to be more important than staying behind with her. The first and only time he truly opened up to her was a means of convincing her to let him walk away to certain doom; needless to say, such crass behavior hurt Faye deeply. She misses him but wants to kick his ass all the same.

Once, Faye ate an entire can of dog food while a hungry puppy was right in front of her and didn't share so much as one bite. In fact, she'll eat nearly anything when hungry - from animal food to something that's long out of date - if there's nothing else available.

Though Faye does have a soft spot for jazz and blues (partially inherited from Spike and Jet), she's mostly a fan of pop type music - nothing overly 'campy,' but stuff that might fall under the 'alternative rock' and 'dance-pop' categories... as well as a touch of outright pop music. This is likely a hint of familiarity from her past seeping through, given that she was a child of the 90's and wasn't frozen until the year 2014. [This tidbit is based off her fondness for the pop song which plays on her radio during the movie.] On the other hand, however, she (rather strongly) detests heavy metal music. [As evidenced in the episode Heavy Metal Queen.]

People who have things in common with Faye and are willing to open up about themselves are much more likely to break through her defensive walls than those who attempt to pry too much.

Please link to a completed thread and list which character(s) you played in said thread Spike Spiegel ([insanejournal.com profile] lunkhead) here. I couldn't resist linking to that one on Faye's app (because she'd hate me for it)...
